On April 6th, 2024, at around 12:05 pm, emergency services were called to Garrett Rd., just north of Middle Crossing Rd., where a farm tractor had crashed. According to initial reports, the tractor, lost control, resulting in a jack-knife situation. Unfortunately, the driver, identified as 23-year-old Nathan Scherer from St. Joseph, MI, was thrown from the tractor’s cab upon impact, the tractor overturned, crushing Mr. Scherer underneath, leading to his untimely death. The incident occurred in Cass County’s Silver Creek Township, shaking the community and prompting a swift response from local authorities. The Pokagon Tribal Police and Indian Lake Fire Department gave urgent help at the scene.
While investigations are ongoing, it remains unclear whether drugs or alcohol played a role. Both the Sheriff’s Office and the Medical Examiner’s Office have launched inquiries to understand the circumstances fully.
