Fiona McGowan, a postmistress from Edinburgh, was wrongly accused of stealing £30,000, leaving her destitute and isolated in a homeless shelter. Stripped of her family, home, and livelihood, she tragically passed away in 2009 at the age of 47.
Following her arrest and charges for false accounting, her life took a sharp downward turn, leading her to seek solace in alcohol. Consequently, her children were taken from her, leaving them to endure the painful repercussions alongside her.
Fiona passed away in solitude at 47 years old on January 21, 2009, inside her quarters at the Woodside Hotel. The reason behind her demise was acute alcohol poisoning.
Fight for Justice
The courageous determination of her three children, Gemma McGowan, William, and Daryl to step up to demand justice, reveals the heartbreaking toll of the Post Office Horizon scandal. They lament that it not only claimed their mother’s life but also shattered their entire existence, leaving them in pieces.
Gemma, 37, shared a heart-wrenching story about her mother’s devastating ordeal with the Post Office, which cost her everything: her job, her family, her well-being, and ultimately her life. This tragedy cast a perpetual shadow over her mother, burdening her until her final days. Gemma and her siblings were left to pick up the pieces of their shattered lives, with their mother’s anguish haunting them. Now, they seek justice on her behalf, determined to right the wrongs she endured because she no longer has a voice to fight for herself.
Tommy Sheppard, the SNP representative for Edinburgh East, has made a heartfelt commitment to support Fiona’s children in any way he can. We Hope Justice will be served as soon as possible.
