Winyamaro, Catherine Haddad’s International Grand Prix Horse, Has Passed Away

Winyamaro, Catherine Haddad’s esteemed Grand Prix horse, gracefully bid farewell on February 8, 2024, at 23. He was a special part of Haddad’s career, following in the footsteps of her other famous horses, Maximus and Cadillac.

Winyamaro, a spirited Hanoverian gelding born from the Walt Disney and Taiga lineage, crafted by breeder Hans-Jurgen Buehrig, embarked on his journey under the guidance of Ralf Kornprobst. Later, Catherine Haddad from Vechta (GER) took over. She guided him through competitions and further training, showcasing his vibrant chestnut beauty with skill and determination.

Haddad trained him up to the Grand Prix level, and together they showcased their skills on the international stage in 2010. Their journey led them to become alternates for the U.S. team at the 2010 World Equestrian Games in Kentucky, following their impressive fourth-place finish at the 2010 U.S. Dressage Championships.

Appearances Limited to National-Level

In 2011, they secured their place to represent the U.S.A. at the World Cup Finals held in Leipzig, Germany, where they achieved a commendable 12th position. In 2012, Winyamaro faced a setback, missing out on the opportunity to vie for a spot on the U.S. Olympic team due to an injury. However, he returned to the arena in the spring of 2013, although his appearances were limited to national-level competitions. Their final performance together was at the 2022 CDI-W Devon event.

Retirement

After ending his sporting career, the chestnut horse seamlessly transitioned into his new role as a schoolmaster, imparting wisdom and skills to Haddad’s eager students, like Hope Beerling. Eventually, in August 2022, he bid farewell to his teaching days and peacefully retired to the serene fields of Madden Mountain in upstate NY under the care of Beezie Madden. Sadly, on February 8, 2024, he trotted over the rainbow bridge, leaving behind a legacy of knowledge and companionship.

A Heartfelt Tribute

Catherine Haddad Staller shared a heartfelt tribute on their Facebook post, she posted,

“You will leave a big hole in our lives, my friend,” Haddad stated. “Be forever too sexy for your shirt, may you gallop on green fields surrounded by admiring fans and may the cameras always be turned your direction.”
